Song in my Head – See Right Through Me – Mobile

Our local radio station, CFOX.com , is where I first heard this song by Mobile, but it didn’t stick with me at the time. Then mid December, I went to the Santa Fox Ball, a charity benefit concert put on by the same radio station. Incura and Mobile were the opening bands, with State of Shock being the headliner (and the reason I went to the show). But from the first song out, Mobile had me intrigued and impressed. Singer Mat has the same sort of stage presence as the singer for ‘the biggest band in the world’. In fact, in physical build, intensity, raw emotion and professionalism, he really does remind me of this other singer. The rest of the band worked as a unit, glorifying the songs instead of the individual and giving it all they had, regardless that it was a benefit show, the venue wasn’t sold out, and tickets were only $9.93. They played it with the same passion given to the live televised performance two years previous, when they won the Juno for Best New Artist (see video above).

Lately, I’ve been hearing the song more frequently on the radio, and for the past two weeks, its been stuck in my head upon waking in the morning. I decided to go visit the band’s Myspace and have listened to 4 more songs from their album ‘Tales from the City’ and decided yesterday to purchase it, based solely on what I’ve heard from those songs. I don’t often do this, but I have a feeling about this band, about this album, and often I discover ‘gems’ this way.

As I type this out, the song is still stuck in my head. I don’t know all the words to it yet – in fact I’m reluctant to learn them well enough to sing along. I sometimes almost feel as if by learning the words, I shift from letting the singer tell me his story, to knowing it already and closing my mind off to new interpretations of that story. This song is the sort that evokes strong images in my mind – I’m a truly visual person so having a song do this is huge for me. The bridge of the song for some reason has always reminded me of scenes in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis – I have no idea why or where it came from, but I kept seeing images in my head till one day realized they were visuals of Metropolis that I viewed on T.V. nearly 30 years ago! The lyrics:

Overhead and closer up there
See the Earth’s fadin’ nations
Shuttles, Spaceships, Satellites
All gathered up there hypnotized
I may climb the highest fences
Face the worthless consequences
Obscured, shattered is the sky
Another lesson learned in time
Many lacks of confidence
In hidden useless conversations

I live to justify to say the reason why
You won’t see right through me, see right through me

You can find the rest of the lyrics HERE
if you wish.
