As many of you witnessed via last night’s 12*12*12 Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief, members of Nirvana, including Foo Fighters Dave Grohl, joined Sir Paul McCartney on stage to perform a brand new song! ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ was written by Grohl and McCartney for the drummer’s forthcoming documentary Sound City. Speaking from the stage shortly before bringing out Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, McCartney said: “So recently, some guys asked me to go and jam with them.” Adding: “I finally understood that I was in the middle of a Nirvana reunion.”
Speaking to Fuse TV, Grohl said of his collaboration: “Tonight I played with Paul McCartney, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. We did a song that we wrote together. It’s a song that we wrote and recorded, no-one has ever heard it before so nobody knows it exists. I think people were expecting us to do a Beatles song or a Nirvana song, but when I first called Paul to see if he would come jam with us none of us wanted to do a Beatles song or a Nirvana song, we wanted to do a new song so we wrote and recorded a new song in a day and it’s heavy as fuck.”
Despite the song being slightly out of McCartney’s vocal suitability, the sheer exuberance on Grohl’s face behind the kit more than made up for it. Solid musicianship all round made this collaboration exciting to witness. This is stuff dreams are made of, for fresh faced up and coming kids who dream of being rock stars.
