BillBoard.com to Count Youtube Hits in Chart Topper Tunes
I just read that more than 4000 different #HarlemShake videos are being uploaded to YouTube every day. That’s how original you are. *Dave98Fm
Watching the news tonight on TV (yes, TV) and they’re talking about Billboard’s new changes that suddenly make Harlem Shake #1 on their charts. Huh? What? Repeat that please?

Yes!

Under the new changes, Billboard is including U.S. Youtube views in the data that ranks the top singles in it’s Hot 100 Chart, (included with radio airplay, physical single sales, digital download sales, on-demand audio streaming and online radio streaming.) The new metrics will assess all official videos on Youtube and partner site Vevo, and user generated clips that use authorized audio. Data will be tracked by ratings firm Nielson. The changes went into effect this week, putting Harlem Shake at No. 1 in its first week on the chart, due to the viral nature of the video. Number One.

Give me a break! Until user generated Youtube videos using the song became all the rage after the short lived Gangnam Style of 2012, it had little attention drawn to it. Now it’s Number one?

Give me a break! (Yeah I know I already said that.. )

Says Billboard in a Press release: “The very definition of what it means to have a hit is ever-changing these days,” said Bill Werde, Billboard’s editorial director. “The Billboard charts are the ultimate measure of success in music, and they constantly evolve to reflect these new music experiences.”

Ultimate measure of success in music? Give me a break! Really… so the new ‘rules’ not only have a flash in the pan song used for flash mob 2013 style at Number One, but have bumped Psy/Gangman Style up from #48 to #26 and Rihanna’s Stay from #57 to #3 on the Charts.

CBC Arts reporter, Deana Sumanac (the station’s news show I was watching btw), hit the nail on the head when she commented what I was thinking! How the F*** (my words) can Billboard consider a flash in the pan novelty song like Gangnam Style or the new Harlem Shake in the same way it considers a serious singer, songwriter or band who put their heart and soul into their craft and dedicate their lives to their careers?

WTF.

NOT TO MENTION the fact of the major labels recently being caught with their hands in the cookie jar and being slapped by Youtube for cheating and buying fake Youtube views.. want to be top of the charts? SHOW ME THE MONEY (yeah, Jerry MaGuire voice)

One can only hope that we all wake up – (to quote Jack White) “LET’S WAKE EACH OTHER UP!”
