Disturbed Sound of Silence

Disturbed has been getting some great press lately, due in part to their stunning rendition of Simon and Garfunkle’s Sound of Silence. While the official video is amazing to listen to and watch, if you’re a skeptic like me, you want to know how the band sounds live, off the floor. Last night’s Conan O’Brien was the ideal opportunity to find out, as the band were the featured musical guests.
Disturbed was accompanied by various symphony musicians including violin, cello and light percussion, but it was David Draiman’s vocals that steal the show on this song. Starting out in a much lower pitch than his usual sound, Draiman sends shivers as the song grows and builds.. when Draiman hits about the halfway mark and his voice hits the highest notes, its an eye opener to just how vast his vocal range is… the high notes are what bring out the ‘rock’ in his voice, including the trademark ‘growl’. Bassist John Moyer, guitarist Dan Donegan and drummer Mike Wengren round out the band and are an integral part of making the song definitely their own. For anyone that is too young to know who Simon and Garfunkel are – this is going to be a ‘Disturbed’ song for them for the rest of their life.
