Toronto Gets a Rivolution
written by Michelle Samcoe

After over 30 years of operation, The Rivoli is being revamped.

The Queen West institution, most notable for its live performance space, has hosted some pretty big names in music and comedy. Stone Temple Pilots, Sloan and even Iggy Pop in an iconic showcase accompanied by Dave Grohl on drums, have all performed on the backroom stage. Many of the musicians topping today’s charts have also played at The Rivoli. Artists Adele, Hozier and Mumford & Sons all played the venue their first time in Toronto.

The backroom is also where Kids in the Hall got their start and comedians like Mike Myers and Sean Majumder have also performed. For budding musicians and comedians in Toronto, The Rivoli is a venue you dream of one day getting to play.

Its original owners decided to sell the bar two years ago and now the three young entrepreneurs who took over want to debut a fresh new look. On June 14th , the doors will opening to the public to celebrate The Rivolution.

Starting at 11:30 AM, there will be events lined up all day for anyone who wishes to drop by. Not only will the upstairs pool tables be free of charge, but at 6 PM, there will be a display by local rock n’ roll photographer Vanessa Heins. Heins has shot artists like Sloan, The Kills and Bruce Springsteen both on stage and off. In classic Rivoli fashion, the backroom will open at 10 PM for a free show featuring a line-up of mystery bands and DJs.

The revamped space comes equipped with a photobooth, from which the proceeds from the day will go to F.U. MS., the charitable organization started by Billy Talent drummer Aaron Solowoniuk inspired by his own battle with the disease.

The revamp comes just in time for NXNE. As a staple venue to the festival, The Rivoli will still be hosting one show, even amidst the week’s own redesign. If you can’t stop by on the 14th, head to The Rivoli’s Facebook page to see their upcoming events so you can see the new look while catching up on some local music.

Everyone has a Rivoli story. Whether it was seeing Adele in her first ever Toronto concert, or laughing with Kids in the Hall, brushing shoulders with Gord Downie, or falling in love over the Riv’s classic Pad Thai, we want to hear about it.
