The Commodore hosts yet another legend in Canadian music on July 5th. Daniel Lanois brings his “Goodbye to Language” tour in support of his latest release.

The album is a collaboration with California based indie artist Rocco DeLuca. From Facebook: “Constructed entirely from the sounds of the pedal steel guitar, Daniel on the pedal steel and his mate Rocco Deluca on the lap steel with compositional rigour that recalls the 20th century dreamscapes of Ravel and Debussy, with a sense of sonic futurism and yet also with the naturalness that can only come from someone rooted in centuries of grassroots music.”

And indeed it is his work with a slew of iconic musicians that most would know Lanois for.

The new album is full of sonic ambience and immediately reminds me of a science fiction movie soundscape ala Bladerunner et al. The track “Deconstruction” is full of samples and tones on top of the pedal steel, with Lanois performing like a DJ at a Trance concert. Yet you can hear the echoes that at one time shaped the sounds of award winning albums by the artists he produced, most notably U2 (remember the Joshua Tree Tour 2017 that just came through?)

it is also interesting to note that DeLuca was his show opener when Lanois visited the Commodore back in 2015…

On Twitter: “Vancouver! Really looking forward to this one.” Canadian music fans should be too.
