Ahh, the Pacific Coliseum – the venerable site of my first concert almost 40 years ago. Who would have thought that a young lad who loved his “Huey Lewis and the News” concert would someday be loving a Queens of the Stone Age concert at the very same venue? I almost can’t believe it’s still standing – I barely am some days. I can’t believe that QOTSA frontman Josh Homme is still standing after the frenetic pace at which he seems to run at 100% of the time. If there’s a harder working man in the music industry, I’d love to know who they are.

QOTSA have a rabid fan-base and those fans will be treated, I’m quite sure, to an old-fashioned rock show QOTSA bring Villains Tour 2018 to the Coliseum. I can’t wait to hear classics like 3’s and 7’s, No One Knows and Little Sister along with new mellower songs like Hideaway and thumping drivers like Domesticated Animals. I have yet to see QOTSA live, so check one more off the bucket list for me.

Their sound has grown over the years; more layered with influences of trance and electronic music, but still with the trademark QOTSA deep bass and repeating riffs. It’s as catchy as anything in rock and yet without the simplicity that most “catchy” songs have in common.

It seems Homme is actually addicted to making music and I can’t think of a healthier addiction for him. Since the genesis of the band that would eventually become QOTSA, he’s been writing, touring, recording or collaborating with seemingly anyone that is talented and driven enough to work with him. Most bands couldn’t handle half the turnover that Homme has seen, but he is the driving force and that force is as unstoppable as a bass line in one of their songs. Regardless of the current lineup, Homme has been determined to make great music; hard rock with a groove. He will use guest musicians, friends, former members; whatever it takes to make his vision come true.
