Ubersocial – THE Best Twitter App for Bands
Twitter is a crazy beast at best – and there are specific ways you can tame it to use it for effective Band promotion as well as talking to fans, and blowing off steam/just for fun.
We’ll talk about some of those other tips and tricks at a later date – this blog is about a really great third party app that is perfect for bands.
It’s called Ubersocial @Ubersoc (previously UberTwitter). Let me preface this entry by saying, I don’t work for Ubersocial, I don’t have shares in the company, I don’t know anyone in the company personally, and I’m not paid to endorse their product. I do however, believe it’s the best Twitter platform on the market to date, and have used it since it was in Beta. I’m crazy about it as a Twitter app for bands and musicians… it’s perfect.
@Ubersoc is available for Blackberry, iPhone and Android and you can find it by googling Ubersocial on web, or search @Ubersoc on Twitter and follow their instructions for downloading… then set it up the way you want. So why is it perfect for bands?
Ubersocial allows you to set up multiple accounts on one cell phone – so theoretically if you have a Twitter for yourself, and a Twitter for your band, you can run them both from the same app – WITHOUT having to sign out and sign in to each account each time you want to switch.
Ubersocial allows you to color code each account with a different theme – you will never again be confused about which account you’re tweeting from (Themes include Blue, Silver/Grey, Pink, Purple, Green, Red, and two that are multi-colored.)
Ubersocial allows you to change the text size, whether you want to add location data or not, how often you want to have it refresh, whether or not to ping you on new @replies or DM’s (direct messages) – we suggest turning this feature off so you don’t get inundated with alerts from exuberant fans tweeting you all hours. It also caches tweets you might miss between uses, and allows you to RT either with the new style (simple RT with no additional info on your part) or the original style where you can add info or a comment on the front of a RT.
It also allows you to create and save your own #Hashtags – which can come in very useful for your band’s own Hashtag, #FollowFriday, #MusicMonday etc… instead of typing them each time, it autofills for you once you start typing the first letters of your Hashtag. Ubersocial also autofills names for you when you start a new tweet with someone’s at name (if they’re on your friends/following list).
So far pretty good right? There’s more
There is something called ‘Inner Circle‘.. this is where it becomes kick ass
– don’t want to miss your band mate’s tweets? Need to see those to cross PR your band’s new video or tour info? BUT you follow 2000 fans and can’t scroll through miles of tweets? Simple. Put your band mates into your Inner Circle – and set it up to buzz or LED you when those people tweet you or DM you. You won’t have to filter tweets or worry about being alerted with all those @ replies from fans. AND if you have a fan club on Twitter – add them to the Inner Circle! Hit the ‘original‘ RT option, add a ‘hey thanks’ to the fan club’s tweets and done in 2 seconds flat!
What if you don’t follow all your fans? (and we actually advise that you don’t). Don’t worry – Tweets directed to you show up Yellow and in your tweet timeline as well as being visible by hitting the @ symbol. DM’s show up Green and in your timeline – but you can also see those by clicking on the DM symbol.
AND you can search names and save searches. Now.. why would a band have to search? Well… have you ever searched your own name? Try it… and while you’re at it, search your own name with a #Hashtag instead of the @Symbol – you’d be surprised how many ‘potential’ fans might be talking about your band and not know you’re on Twitter! Shock them by RT-ing them and adding a comment! You’ll gain not just one new fan, but anyone they tweet to say, “guess who tweeted me out of the blue!”. Also try searching your name without a #Hashtag or @Symbol – if the band name is two words – try using two words with that space in between. Again you might be surprised at how many new fans you find!
Set up Selective Tweets with your Facebook account, and save #FB as a Hashtag, and you can now update both Twitter and FB from one tweet – but without using those ‘other’ apps that send every tweet to your Facebook page (people absolutely despise this)
And you can also do the regular things like create lists, find trending topics, change your profile on the fly, etc.. but it’s the Inner Circle and multiple accounts that really got us hooked! The potential for bands/artists using this is huge. Check out Ubersocial – we’re convinced once you start using it you won’t go back to the Twitter client you were using before you tried it. And let us know what you think of it!
