“Hard hitting booze driven rock”.
These are the words lead singer Nick Weber used to describe the sound of Pigeon Park at their recent ‘Stripes’ CD release party at the Roxy this past weekend. After hearing them perform, I couldn’t agree more! Pigeon Park were performing as part of Todd Hancock’s Toddcast Podcast ‘Cheap Thrills Volume 3’ event.
This was a very unique performance for Pigeon Park. The band put down anything electric and went all acoustic, which is a very different sound for them. Softer and smoother, but no less hard hitting. Gnarly guitar riffs filled the venue and produced the desired effect – bodies swayed back and forth while the crowd jammed out to to the tunes. The cool thing was that the band hosted a Q & A in-between songs, with host Todd Hancock asking his own questions as well as questions from the crowd including questions about singer Weber’s first kiss! For those not in the know, Hancock is the former CFOX radio Indie night/afternoon drive host who is now killing it on his own podcast show. He was also the driving force behind the station’s SEEDS contest, which Pigeon Prk won in 2013, and which truly launched the band into the music industry.
Pigeon Park is bold. They were ballsy enough to cover one of the greatest Rock and Roll bands of all time, Led Zeppelin. “Going to California” was their song of choice and it was dedicated to Dave Reibenschuh, a close friend of the band who passed away recently. Robert Plant and the rest of Led Zeppelin would have been proud.
It was a treat hearing Pigeon Park belt out songs in their acoustic versions. Of course, radio hit “High to Get By” was a crowd favourite. The band was even selling rolling papers at the merch table to go along with it! Given the choice between live or the CD version, I would take live every day! These gentleman are certainly crowd pleasers; Rock and Roll is still alive in this country and Pigeon Park is a testament to that.
