Chameleon Technology – Interesting riffs, walls of sound, and a good sense of groove
Written by Vaughn Oliver

California’s one-man band, Chameleon Technology, put forth their newest EP earlier this year entitled Blank Canvas. You may have noticed I said ‘one-man band’ followed by the plural possessive ‘their’, and that’s because when Chameleon Technology creator Max Histrionic gets on stage he… well… he plays with himself. Joining him on stage is high-quality “live” audio of drums and bass, synced with visuals of, you guessed it, Histrionic himself playing said instruments. Why he does it? We may never know. What we do know is that the concept will be “changing continually”, said Max in a recent interview. I’m pretty excited to see what he does next.

On to the actual music, shall we?

Blank Canvas, in it’s 11 minute entirety, is a broad range of mostly heavier styles – aggressive punk and metal – with a lot of style and groove that you don’t usually find in that type of music. The opening track, for example, is a raw, visceral view of sexual relations aptly titled, “No Safe Word”. An animalistic nature accompanied with rampant guitars and pounding drums. Not completely juxtaposing, the next track opens hard with a catchy call and response hook and groovy post-chorus. As we go on the songwriting and stylings get better and better. Imagery of Green Day and The Offspring are heard on “Lifestyle Science” and “Blank Canvas”, respectively.

Chameleon Technology‘s Blank Canvas does have a lot of things going for it. With interesting riffs, walls of sound, and a good sense of groove, Blank Canvas is an EP that you should give a try. You might enjoy the aggressive tone, or the head bobbing beats. Personally, I hope some of the instrumental sections will get more love and attention next time around. The breakdowns were too simple to keep me engaged, and I felt more melody was required.

Still wondering though, what is this guy going to think up next?

If you want to be the first to know, get on over to his Facebook Page and Twitter. You can also find his music on Bandcamp and Souncloud.
