Scottish Alt-rockers Teenage Fanclub are bringing most of their original lineup to the Commodore Ballroom for the start of the Canadian leg of their world tour. Founders Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley and Francis MacDonald plan on digging deep into their catalog along with Dave McGowan on bass and frequent collaborator Euros Childs on keyboards.
From their webpage:
“expect to hear things in the setlist beyond what you might have heard in recent years. And we’ve been working on new songs too, so maybe expect to hear a couple of those too.”
One of the interesting things about the band is how fluid their lineup is, even to the point where the latest album in the works sees Dave McGowan switching from keys to bass.
From a recent interview with Bad Feeling Magazine, Norman Blake had this to say:
“Things change — when Brendan left the band, he was such a big part of the band way back in the early days, I mean I don’t know if you saw the band back then — well, Paul was playing drums for the Radiohead stuff — but Brendan, our first drummer, was kind of insane. He was absolutely off his head. And he was such a ball of energy when we played shows, so when he left — well, we kind of fell out with him, we’re all good friends now — but when Brendan was replaced by Paul, the whole dynamic and the aesthetic changed. So that happens in bands, things change. But I think our default position is, it’s only a band, you know?”
As of this writing there are still tickets left, and at $41 it’s a steal for a little musical time-travel back to the ‘90s. And to catch yourself up, check out the remastered albums from their Creation Records years.
