Styx on a mission with stellar performance at PNE

The stars were out and aligned for a perfect (technical issues aside) performance by prog rockers Styx at a sold-out PNE Amphitheatre on Sunday night.

The mostly mature audience were treated to a set of easily recognizable hits and classics resulting in dancing, singing along and fist pumping. Sole original member James “J.Y.” Young traded licks with veteran member Tommy Shaw for the rockers while Gowan handled the vocals and keys masterfully. His solo hit “A Criminal Mind” slotted nicely in the middle of the set and drew a huge response from the Canadian fans.

One of the biggest highlights of the night was the funk-infused “Too Much Time on My Hands” that had all ages singing and dancing.

Having seen Styx several times (including opening for Def Leppard in the 2000’s) I have to say this is the best they have sounded. The performance of Todd Sucherman on drums really drove the rhythm section with punch and power that was fully supported by bassist Ricky Phillips. Combined with the frenetic energy that Gowan brought while dancing across the stage, it was a master-class in rock and roll.

The other lesson for aspiring bands: dress your part! From Gowan’s Nasa-inspired band jacket to J.Y.’s brocade blazer to Tommy Shaw’s glittery ensemble, these veterans were a runway of stage fashion that enhanced their presence.

The night ended with “Come Sail Away”…the fans sang along loud and proud as the band poured every last ounce of energy into it.

My review doesn’t do this concert justice; it was truly the best of the PNE Summer Nights Concerts of 2019.
