JD and the Straight Shot
Good Luck and Good Night album review

For those unfamiliar with Americana band JD & the Straight Shot, just reading the lengthy credentials of the band members is enough to make one pause.

From their press release: “Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Jim Dolan, guitarist Marc Copely (B.B. King, Rosanne Cash), bassist Byron House (Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton), violinist/fiddler Erin Slaver (Martina McBride, Rod Stewart), drummer/percussionist Shawn Pelton (Sheryl Crow, Levon Helm, Saturday Night Live band), and guitarist Carolyn Dawn Johnson (Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney)”

Canadian country fans certainly recognize the last name on the list, as she has had a strong solo career for some time now. But is the sum greater than all of the parts?

The inroad for some would be their cover of Three Dog Night’s “Shambala”. The vocal harmonies are strong on the chorus, in counterpoint to a more understated instrumental performance.

Another strong track on the album, “Run for Me”, is a rousing ditty about betting at the track…down to the horse gallop rhythm. The Irish Folk sound will drop in perfectly next St. Patrick’s Day.

And it is really the level of musicianship that carries this album. The fact the album is “100% acoustic” helps it stand out as well. But like a sports team, putting some star players together doesn’t always equal success. Chemistry and soul are needed to take such a band to the next level.

But hey, opening for the Eagles…that’s putting the bar right in front of you. Hopefully these stars can bring their “A” game as their opener at Rogers Arena.
