The Glorious Sons started their 14 date Canadian tour in Kamloops a week or so back, and we were front row centre! This band from Kingston have come a long long way in a few short years and the crowds just keep growing. Having just finished the Canadian leg of the tour with sell outs in nearly every city, they’re currently dipping into the US for a string of dates, culminating with another show in Vancouver at The Commodore Dec. 30.
We want to thank frontman Brett Emmons for taking time out of his super busy day to talk to us!
nightMair Creative: Hi Brett. We’ve been following The Glorious Sons tour progress after the Kamloops show (on your social media sites). Was it as fun and crazy as it looked?
Brett Emmons: (laughing) Yeah… its been fun and crazy (laughs again). I feel like the Kamloops show was good, but at that point I kind of hit a bit of a wall both mentally and physically but, it took me a couple of days after that and I got a second wind and I haven’t stopped since – and its been incredible.
nMC: It seems that as the shows progressed you also become more… uninhibited? for lack of a better word. Putting yourself ‘out there’ more and more with each show. As a performer how do you know if you’re putting yourself out there too much – is there too much? Can you lose part of yourself or hit burnout by doing that?
Brett: I don’t know. That’s a good question. For me, the more I’ve shared myself with … the world I guess, for lack of a better term, the more it’s benefited myself and the band. I mean, I have had troubles with that in the past with trying to separate real life from touring, and rock and roll, and this crazy circus.
I think this tour has taught me that this is real life. I mean. 0.01% of people in this world get to do what my band and I are doing, and to me, it seems … it would be such a waste to not enjoy it while its happening because this kind of life, this kind of career its not.. I mean, nothing is 100% sure in this business. I kind of just realized I don’t want to be looking back and wondering, if I truly didn’t give this life my best shot. Ever since I realized that, things have just been absolutely incredible. Like I said its all been about me putting myself out there. Good things happen when you’re open and you’re excited and happy. There’s something to be said for the energy you put out being returned to you.
nMC: Do you think that’s part of the growing up process, or the sobriety or a combination?
Brett: the sobriety thing – I had felt like I was kind of losing my head a little bit.. losing who I was. I have been drinking (on this tour), and I don’t have any quarrels with that right now – I could stop again if I need my head in check again but right now I feel happy. And I don’t know if it’s a growing up thing -I think it was just a letting go of sorts, of trying to be someone I am not. I think that for a long time I was pushing away who I was, and what my job was, and what that meant to me and how that affects my life. I wasn’t at all taking advantage of how much I love to do this. And then we went on the road for three months and I had the greatest time of my life (laughs) I just want to keep working (still laughing).
nMC: You’re now in the US doing shows… how different is that than Canadian dates?
Brett: well right now we are opening for The Struts. And these shows have been sold out for a while because they (The Struts)have a really, really loyal fan base. So I think right now we’re getting in front of people who wouldn’t necessarily know our band that much, and that always takes a little more work. But its been very beneficial and people have been amazing. The shows have been going so well. You can never complain about a tour with The Struts because they’re rock and roll fans and they’re there to be a part of the show and to be alive, excited. It’s been great. Really good.
nMC: So what’s in store for The Glorious Sons for 2019?
Brett: well we’re going to make an album at some point… we’re going to tour, and we’re going to keep working. There’s nothing to be announced right now but it comes down to the bottom line; keep working, capitalize on the momentum, don’t let it go. We’re hot now – we’re not always going to be hot. I want to take this time and strike – make something happen. We’re going to keep running. Its very exciting for me to be doing this right now. All we’re doing is rock and roll and singing to people and I love it! When you realize you’re doing what you love, you should be thankful for that. Good things can happen.
