An Evening With Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson

An Evening with Bruce Dickinson – Heavy Metal Frontman, Commercial Airline Pilot, Comedian?

Legendary Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson was greeted by a heavy rain and a rapt audience last Monday night at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster, British Columbia. He quickly added the listing of comedian to his extensive and impressive CV.

This time his stage apparel was not stretchy colourful pants…he looked comfortable and casual in black pants, black tee and bright red runners. But the kinetic energy was present and kept the attention of a lifetime’s worth of stories that he told with British wit, acerbity and timely delivery.

Dickinson started naturally with talking about the size of his member and his birth. Then the stories went chronologically with these being some of the highlights:

On school and how the final straw for his expulsion was urinating in the headmasters meal. “There is no DNA in urine.” is printed on his tour shirt.

On how he was introduced to the music of Deep Purple and decided he wanted to be…a drummer.

On his first big link to Canada being how he bought a life-sized replica of a Canada goose while on tour with Samson and gaffer taped it to the top of their rental car.

On how he risked his life unknowingly taking a photo with a Russian tank in Sarejevo. “Last guy that did that got shot”

On how the only hair that survived on his face during treatment for cancer ended making him look like “an out of work porn star.”

And how his near-death experience was actually getting a ride in an underpowered airplane piloted by drummer Nicko McBrain (who didn’t have his pilot’s license yet).

The evening was broken up as Bruce took a break; they played the latest Iron Maiden video on the screen. 20 minutes later he finished off the night with a small selection of questions from the audience. With a pleasant good night, he left the stage. A handful of fans hung around wistfully hoping for an autograph but they too left the building.

Bruce Dickinson has managed to master many more things than most would in a lifetime. He can honestly say he can entertain a crowd for hours without a band or 10 foot Eddie mascot. It was truly a fascinating look into the life of someone not scared to live it.
