An Evening with Bruce Cockburn: The Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts

One would think most Canadians (and more than a few from outside the country) would be aware of the laundry list of achievements by songwriter and guitarist Bruce Cockburn. And the raw honesty of his music is reflected in activism on many levels; championing native rights, Oxfam, Amnesty International…the list is as impressive as it is extensive.

This connection from life to pen to guitar to lyrics is likely what makes Cockburn’s extensive catalog so timeless. While he could retire with accolades at any time, instead he has chosen to bring his live act to compelled audiences. While it may be tough for some artists to excel in one or two genres, he has embraced a variety of styles and worldly places.

In November of last year, Bruce released Rarities, a digital collection of songs previously available only in his very limited-edition Rumours of Glory box set, plus four tracks plucked from tribute compilations and remastered, one very early demo (“Bird Without Wings,” from 1966) and a track heard only on the Japanese version of Life Short Call Now (“Twilight On the Champlain Sea” featuring Ani DiFranco). He also reissued audiophile-quality editions of his self-titled 1970 debut album, 1996’s Charity of Night and 1999’s Breakfast In New Orleans, Dinner In Timbuktu.

And from the reviews, fans attending this extensive tour will get a full 2 hours of this content. I’m looking forward to seeing Bruce Cockburn live for the first time; for at the age of 70 who knows how many more times he will venture out from San Francisco? According to him, as long as he can.
