We all have a disco faze, and it definitely looks better on some more than others. In this case, Bleached is some of the better looking ones.
With a video that is reminiscent of the pool parties I imagine my parents used to throw (you know, if they lived in So-Cal and knew at least one body-builder), Bleached’s “Kiss You Goodbye” kicks the visuals into high gear with bright colours, throwback fashion ala Boogie Nights, and frilly umbrella toothpicks galore. The fun, care-free attitude captures the spirit of the Bleached we all know, expressing their thoughts and opinions to a tee, and unabashedly at that.
“Kiss You Goodbye” itself is a surf-disco hit, combining bright, shimmering guitars accompanying a disco beat held down with a solid drum and bass combo. A real groove-fest. The vocal melody lines are short and pointing, easily getting across the emotion in the lyrics, “Kiss you goodbye / for the last time / return to sender / feeling so alive / some things are meant to die.” The group also brings in what I call the “punk-pop breakdown” (re: any Blink-182 song) but in their own unique style. It’s refreshing and energetic with great arrangement and tasteful usage of visceral “oohs” and “ahs”.
Working with producer Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells), the dynamic of Clavin sisters, Jennifer and Jessica, is strong and fruitful, not to mention highly versatile given their track record. So far they’ve been able to take a strong surf-rock foundation and build just about anything on top, integrating new styles with ease.
Bleached are currently in plans to release their next album on July 12th – Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough?. Written from a place of sobriety, it is said to be their most courageous work yet. Can’t wait.
