Kevin Okabe (Pigeon Park singer) Returns with ‘Passing Cars’

Sometimes surprising things rise from the ashes of a band that suddenly implodes, despite their promising outlook. Such seems to be the case for guitarist Kevin Okabe, whose debut single “Passing Cars” is a distinct one-eighty from the rock and roll of award-winning Vancouver band, formerly known as Pigeon Park.

From his Soundcloud profile: “Following a soul searching sabbatical travelling and busking around the world, rediscovering his identity, a decision was made for a fresh start – a decision to carry his own project.”

“Passing Cars” is a groovy jam, slick and oozing with a chill, jazz vibe. I was reminded immediately of Steely Dan…it’s that polished. The mix is lush and the musicianship impeccable. The lyrics are hypnotic and ride the undulating waves of guitar arpeggios, and at times an ebb-and-flow percussion. The minimalist mix allows each instrument to shine.

I’d slap an album of this on while inviting my friends over for upscale cocktails and elevated conversation. Really looking forward to more of this.

Check out Kevin Okabe…teasers on his Facebook and Soundcloud, and the single drops December 13th.
